2025 40 Under 40 Honoree: Halle Stockton (39)
"Recognizing that we can all bring something to the table is just very powerful and helps us all to actually fulfill a mission of making local journalism be something that's not stiff or intimidating, but something that people want to talk about."
Halle Stockton
Editor-in-Chief, Co-Executive Director, Pittsburgh’s Public Source
Halle Stockton has always loved asking questions. That curiosity has driven the journalism career of this Erie native from Penn State’s college newspaper to the Sarasota Herald-Tribune in Florida and now to Pittsburgh’s Public Source, the nonprofit digital publication where she directs the staff’s deep independent journalism.
Building collaboration is at the heart of everything she does, whether it’s through mentoring high school or college students or coming up with creative ways to lead her organization.
“I’m really proud of the kind of the spectrum of journalism that we do,” she says. “Most newsrooms will lean heavily one way, it’s either community storytelling, daily news or investigations. And I think that we’ve built a model that blends all of it, and we have an approach that helps make us part of people’s lives while still holding decision makers and institutions accountable.”
