2023 40 Under 40 Honoree: Maggie Giel-Bovaird (36)
“We believe children’s current ZIP code should not define their future. We believe that all children have potential — and mentors help them find that.”
Maggie Giel-Bovaird
Director of Outreach and Recruitment,
Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Pittsburgh
Since joining Big Brothers Big Sisters in 2012 with a mission to “create a better future for Pittsburgh’s families and the region,” Maggie Giel-Bovaird has developed two programs that offer unique mentoring experiences to local youth.
The Mentor 2.0 program pairs high school students with adult mentors who can help them achieve their post-graduation goals.
The other program, called Bigs in Blue, matches law enforcement officials with local children, which Giel-Bovaird says “bridges a divide” that exists in many communities.
The Shaler native says she is inspired by the nonprofit’s team of “reliable, authentic” mentors and stays grounded by being a Big Sister herself — to a mentee who has taught her “a million things about resiliency.”
