'Only Jesus'

'Only Jesus' captures the vitality moving live services at East Liberty's Mount Ararat Baptist Church with hymns and songs.

With a sense of soul music rocking everyone present, the beat can move your feet or sweet humility can take you by the hand in this assemblage of 15 tracks. Only Jesus captures the vitality moving live services at East Liberty's Mount Ararat Baptist Church with hymns and songs arranged by the choir's musical directors and performed by members of the congregation.

Musical director Jerome Kirkland gets sturdy performances from nine solo singers and from the choir, while, at the same time, coming up with out-of-the-ordinary keyboard embellishments. With him, too, are seven other musicians at keyboards, guitars and drums, able, at times, to even imply an orchestra.

The harmonies and the beat sometimes reach out to the edges of jazz, to the sound of urban contemporary pop, even to rap. You can find the CD online and more at mt-ararat.org.
