Running Into Love: Brian Tabb & Elaina Balouris

photos by Goldstein Photography

October 22, 2017

When Brian Met Elaina.
Though Elaina Balouris was from Pittsburgh and Brian Tabb was from Texas, both moved to Boston after college. Elaina for work – she is a professional distance runner – and Brian for graduate school. Elaina’s teammate and Brian’s roommate, Chris O’Hare, introduced them.

“I was also in grad school at the time, so we started studying together and then he asked me out to dinner,” Elaina says. “We started dating, and we dated for about a year and a half.”

She Said Yes.
During that time, they also met each other’s families in Pittsburgh and in Texas on several occasions. On one of these visits to Texas in 2016, they arrived in Kingsland with plans to go to a winery.

“In Texas, southern culture takes over and everything is nice and slow and laid back,” Elaina says. “Brian convinced me to go out to the dock with him and wait and talk while the rest of the family finished getting ready. While we sat there, Brian said to me, ‘When we get engaged, I want both our families to be there and be a part of the celebration.’ I agreed (thinking it would probably happen in the next couple years).”

Instead, Brian proposed to Elaina right then and there.

“Before I know it, he’s down on one knee, presenting an engagement ring. I asked him if it was a joke since we just decided that we wanted both our families to be there. I knew my family was home in Pittsburgh. Brian said, ‘No, they’re here right now.’

“I looked up and saw my parents and brother, Anthony, come out of the house, and I was flooded with shock, elation and so much love. That’s when I realized this wasn’t a prank … I said, ‘Yes,’ of course, and both our families got to be there for it.”

The Big Day.
The couple had a Greek wedding at Elaina’s church, Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church in McCandless Township. The reception was held at Soldiers & Sailors Memorial Hall & Museum in Oakland.

“Our wedding was an incredible day,” Elaina says. “We were very grateful that our friends and family could travel to Pittsburgh to celebrate with us.”

Happily Ever After.
Elaina and Brian honeymooned in Cape Town, South Africa, and Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe.

The couple, both 26, continue to live in Boston, where Elaina runs professionally for the Boston Athletic Association and Brian works in corporate treasury at Eastern Bank. They love being outside, playing Frisbee, traveling and spending time with their families.
