December’s Can’t Miss Concerts in Pittsburgh

This month features Jane Lynch, Brian Wilson, Cat Power and more.

Dec. 3/ December in Pittsburgh brings a bounty of holiday musical offerings for every little elf in your life. Multitalented actress and singer Jane Lynch gets the month going with an evening of retro cheer, A Swingin’ Little Christmas, presenting jazzily arranged classics alongside The Tony Guerrero Quintet, arranger Tim Davis and Kate Flannery, another talented singer/actress best known as Meredith from “The Office.” (Greer Cabaret Theater, 655 Penn Ave., Downtown; 412/456-6666, trustarts.org)

Dec. 3/ Are thoughts of winter’s frigid inevitability darkening your mantel this holiday season? Throw on a Hawaiian shirt and hang ten Downtown to hear Brian Wilson presents The Christmas Album Live, sure to herald in some warmer feelings. Wilson and his band, joined by Al Jardine and Blondie Chaplin, will play hits from his 2005 release, “What I Really Want for Christmas,” as well as the classic “The Beach Boys’ Christmas Album.” The cheery surf rock will leave visions of Santa putting plane tickets to sunny California in your stocking dancing in your head. (Heinz Hall, 600 Penn Ave., Downtown; 412/392-4900, pittsburghsymphony.org)

Dec. 11/ If you prefer to celebrate the season beneath a Christmas tree, perhaps you’ll enjoy Ingrid Michaelson Trio Presents: Songs for the Season. Michaelson’s new album, “Songs for the Season,” is a collection of seasonal favorites, interpreted in her sweet, pretty style that sometimes swings and sometimes swoons, always twinkling. (Carnegie of Homestead Music Hall, 510 E. 10th Ave., Munhall; 412/462-3444, librarymusichall.com)

Dec. 19/ Do you ever think about the Grinch like … maybe bro needed his heart to be a few sizes smaller because he just felt too much? I get you, and so does Cat Power. During the course of her long career, Chan Marshall has been an indie force, full of emotion that could be dark, or cunning, or sexy depending on her mood — and yours. It’s the perfect antidote when you’re feeling overwhelmed by holiday cheer. (Mr. Smalls, 400 Lincoln Ave., Millvale; 412/821-4447, mrsmalls.com)
