Millvale bakery creates scrumptious salted-caramel macarons

The building exterior is unassuming, showing the high-water mark from the 2004 Millvale flood. But inside, raspberry-pink, lemon-yellow and pistachio-green macarons are cheery enough to brighten even the murkiest November day. A far cry from the coconut-crusted puffballs that most Americans call macaroons, French macarons sandwich heady fillings between wafers of delicate almond meringue. All the flavors at Jean-Marc Chatellier’s French Bakery are divine, but the salted caramel is particularly luscious, with buttery caramel oozing from between the crisp-chewy cookies. Chatellier’s signature Breton shortbread is another unique treat, a 7-inch round cake that’s a hybrid of flaky puff pastry and dense shortbread (it crumbles, it flakes and it tastes like butter).

Edward Marc offers all-you-can-eat tour to chocoholics

Next Saturday, skip the four-hour drive to Hershey, Pa., and check out Edward Marc Chocolatier's factory instead. Starting at 9:30 a.m., you can venture inside and prepare to "become a true chocolatier" for the day, taking part in one of four tours and sampling treats along the way. The company opens its doors to the public a handful of times each year, but this tour is rather special: For the first time, you're permitted to gobble all the chocolate you want (enticing, huh?). After entering the factory, you will be guided through the chocolate-making process from start to finish and have the chance to snag sweets right from the enrobing line. If that weren't enough, you can try your hand at making your own indulgent creations.

And since you've undoubtedly vowed to start your holiday shopping early this year, be sure to visit the on-site store to buy sea-salt caramels and chocolate Santas for the chocoholics on your list.

Meat & Potatoes adds brunch to offerings

This hot Cultural District restaurant recently introduced a weekend brunch. With a list of libations that’s nearly as extensive as the array of entrées, you know it’s a great place to bring the in-laws for the upcoming holidays. Who can say no to a French Toast Flip (a cocktail with Tuaca liqueur, egg and cinnamon) alongside their actual French toast? What better to go with a plate of savory brisket and eggs than an “Irish Breakfast” coffee spiked with Jameson whiskey and topped with bacon whipped cream? If grown-up drinks aren’t on your agenda, it’s still a delicious place to fill up, whether you go for the classic benedict or the pub burger with fried egg.
