Back to Gym Class at the Ace Hotel Pittsburgh

You won't want to skip these trendy throwback classes (dodgeball, anyone?) at the former YMCA in East Liberty.

What once was the East Liberty YMCA now is Ace Hotel Pittsburgh (acehotel.com/pittsburgh), a 63-room boutique hotel with a flair for the artful and thoughtful.

The building’s former life is not merely a relic, however; guests and neighbors alike still are congregating inside The Gym, the hotel’s multipurpose event and activity space. “We want it to be a place where everyone crashes into each other — guests and city residents,” says Aaron Clark, the hotel’s cultural engineer.

That means open games of dodgeball (co-presented with City of Play) every second Monday, hosting the long-running Title Town dance parties, morning yoga sessions every Sunday and Tuesday, special public events and more.

July brings the first Weekend Send Sunday Sunset Party; on July 17, trendsetting Downtown dance party Hot Mass will head to East Liberty to take over the gym and Ace’s neighboring alley for an all-day block party. Additional Sunset Parties are set for Aug. 7 and Sept. 4; if you can’t make it, stop by any Friday night for Open Gym, a laid-back, free gathering featuring games, food, drinks and more.

Keep an eye on Ace’s website for more upcoming events. “We want it to be constantly changing,” Clark says.
