Matchmaker: How to Choose the Right Divorce Attorney

Properly selecting a divorce attorney for your particular situation is all about recognizing your style and identifying your goals. Ask yourself these questions to get started when researching your options.

Do you and your spouse aim for an amicable resolution?

If so, you’ll want to find a divorce attorney who is skilled in methods of alternative dispute resolution such as collaborative law, mediation or arbitration. Are you already having issues with your soon-to-be-ex that you do not see being resolved amicably and you need a hard-hitting litigator who can drill down through the chaos of a complex case? If so, you’ll want to look for a divorce attorney skilled in the art of litigation and with a solid reputation in the courtroom.  While attorneys do practice both kinds of resolution, some may be stronger in venue over the other. It’s important for you to figure out first which route works best for you and your divorcing partner.

Do you need a more empathetic attorney or are you all business?
Even though it’s not their job to be your therapist, as divorce attorneys we are often put in the position of consoling. It’s the nature of the type of work and we recognize the void we fill. However, some attorneys are obviously more prone to a long-listening phone call and others might prefer to be more business-oriented and direct. Recognize ahead of time what your emotional support needs may be during the divorce proceedings and take into account what you expect from your attorney.

The above mentioned are of course not the only considerations when choosing the right family law attorney for your situation. You’ll want to take into account office location, cost, support staff, law firm size, and the reputation of both the attorney and the firm. However, these first two questions are often overlooked criteria. In order to avoid a frustrating mismatch, start by realizing and matching your needs and goals before branching out into the more pragmatic approach.

We would be happy to discuss with you more about the different styles of our 14 family law attorneys at Pollock Begg Komar Glasser & Vertz LLC. Start with your goals and then pick up the phone and give us a call.
