3 Tips for Dealing with Divorce Stress


With divorce often comes worry, negativity and uncertainty. It’s easy during a turbulent time to spiral into stress overload. During the process of divorce, you can find yourself forgetting even the simplest stress-free guides you may have easily followed before.  Don’t self-sabotage.  Remember these three simple tips for dealing with stress which hopefully were already part of your healthy lifestyle routine. 

1. Pay attention to your own mental and emotional needs.
It’s easy to lose sight of making time for your own mental and emotional needs during the divorce process, especially if you are also caring for children and undergoing custody proceedings. This rule is just as important as putting the oxygen mask on yourself first in an airplane. You cannot expect to care for your children’s emotional needs if you are not also first taking care of your own. Seek out a therapist; call a friend; find a support group. Make sure you take responsibility for your own emotional well-being. 

2. Keep exercising. 
While you have even less time right now as you juggle extra appointments with an attorney or court dates as well as countless nights filling out paperwork or researching new residential options, make time for your physical health. Exercise is the most natural anti-anxiety treatment —  It relieves tension and boosts physical and mental energy through the release of endorphins. Besides the other obvious health benefits, engaging in a repetitive motion of a run with the wind on your skin, the gentle calming stretches of yoga, or even the empowering strength training of CrossFit, equips you with new levels of pride and accomplishment which also counter the stressful elements of your new day-to-day during this time.

3. Let it go. 
You cannot control it all. In fact, trying to do so only complicates your emotional well-being and adds to your stress level. For those going through divorce or custody proceedings, you have even less control over areas of your life which you wish you had more control. Let go of problems and circumstances beyond your control. Stay focused on what you can control and celebrate your small victories.
