Hit the Street: Mt. Lebanon

Great shopping, tasty dining, fine art and one unusual hardware store all are packed within the community’s borders.

Get the latest looks at Ona Boutique [692 Washington Road]. The women’s clothing shop is known for its “throw-on” dresses, which trendy ladies can dress up or down.

Search for the perfect gift at Koolkat Designs [691 Washington Road]. The art boutique is best known for locally made, hand-crafted jewelry, but it also features woodcarvings, photography, paintings and other unique pieces from more than 200 local artists.

If you’ve got a home-improvement question, chances are someone from Rollier’s Hardware [600 Washington Road] can answer it. The family-owned business, established in 1953, is known for its customer service and knowledgeable staff, not to mention its variety of products — think lamps and plumbing fixtures alongside photo frames and candles.

Rock out at Empire Music [719 Washington Road]. Besides its inventory of custom-made Taylors and just about every guitar on the market, Empire offers music lessons for kids and adults on guitar, bass, piano, drums, banjo and even the ukulele.

Grab a handcrafted beer, local wine or Pennsylvania-made cider at Hitchhiker Brewing Company [190 Castle Shannon Blvd.]. Pair your drink of choice with one of the pub’s small-plate offerings, including pulled pork sliders imported from nearby Café io [300 Beverly Road].

While You’re There

Visit another country, or at least enjoy its cuisine, at Orbis Caffe [675 Washington Road]. The coffeehouse picks a region or country each month to inspire its weekly Sunday brunch. The fun concludes with a dinner party usually set for the last Saturday of the month.

This spring, Koolkat Designs will partner with the owners of Rollier’s Hardware to open The Artsmiths of Pittsburgh, an art gallery, café and performance space in the 10,000-square-foot barn on McFarland Road that formerly housed the Rollier’s store.
