The Smiling Moose Aims to Please
At some point in its nine-year lifespan, Carson Street standout The Smiling Moose began filling an under-represented niche in the South Side spectrum. Actually, it’d be more accurate to say it stopped filling a niche. See, unlike most joints on that side of the river, the Moose has become an anytime, anyone kind of a bar—go for food, go for drinks, go for the game, go for a show, go for quiet, whatever. There are bars where you go to party, there are bars where you go to eat, and there are bars where you go to hang out—and the Moose can be all three. Read up on South Side’s most agreeable establishment in this week’s edition of After Dark!

Heat Up the Night at Istanbul
Istanbul Grille, the multicultural, multifaceted venue and eatery in the heart of Lawrenceville, always warms up a cold winter night. This Saturday, it’ll bring the heat by spinning the globe all the way to Brazil for a samba performance by Sao Paolo’s own Luciana Brussi Constantino. The acclaimed performer and choreographer will not only show off her own moves, but also teach you a few of your own—there will be an informal lesson during intermission and an open dance at the end of the evening. Some of the ’Burgh’s resident belly dancers will join in the fun. And don’t be shy about bringing the kids—the young ones are encouraged to attend, and aspiring dancers younger than 12 get in for free.
(4130 Butler St., Lawrenceville. Sat., 7:30 p.m. $8. Info, tickets: janim.org)
