Hoppy Home: Decorate Your Table for Spring
Local experts share their tips for creating a seasonal tablescape that's perfect for Easter and beyond.
As springtime approaches, it’s time to switch out your dark colors and snowflakes for pastels and flowers. Your table is one place in your home where it’s easy to be creative with seasonal decorating. Pittsburgh Magazine talked to local store owners for their tips on how to make your springtime tablescape bloom.
According to Kym Pelcher, owner of Splurge in Fox Chapel, your table is a great place to experiment with trendy decor.
Found Glass Demijohn, from $75. Faux Floral Stems, from $12 — from Splurge
“For Spring 2018, jewel tones are hot,” Pelcher says. “Play around with some fun, colored vases set off with coordinating florals. Don’t be afraid to set the stems free. Let them lay across the table next to a vase and they will speak for themselves.”
Wood and enamel pedestal servers, $39-$59 — from Splurge
Pelcher also notes using natural wood servers gives a table a farmhouse feel. She recommends varying the height of the pieces for added impact.
Barbara Hollihan, co-owner of Outside Inspirations in Pine Township, has a trick to keep floral centerpieces looking fresh.
“I always incorporate, for Easter, a lot of spring flowers, like tulips or hyacinths or little potted plants in pretty planters,” she says. “I recommend using both silk and real flowers. That helps to make them look real and a little springier, but yet it keeps for a lot longer.”
She suggests pulling everything together with a inexpensive Easter staple that almost everyone has in their home — Easter basket grass. By using it as a placemat and then sprinkling it down the center of the table, it keeps everything cohesive while giving you a variety of decor styles.
“I love the new paper placemats because they add some freshness to your look, and I can pull colors from them,” Hollihan says. “I like to mix the old and the new. I find an old jar or vase from my mom or from my grandmother and then I mix in some more contemporary-looking spring pieces.”
