Our Dream Penthouse Used to be a Carpet Warehouse

The building that now houses a $1.05 million dollar penthouse was first used for a much less exciting purpose.

In the 1900s, the building at 4041 Liberty Ave. in Bloomfield was constructed to house the Empire Furniture Co. It wasn’t a stretch when it later served as the Roth Carpet Warehouse and Showroom.

Today, the building is undergoing a rebirth as Empire on Liberty, a 42,000-square-foot structure that will house street-level retail, first- and second-floor office space and condos on the third floor. Empire on Liberty, which is Pittsburgh Magazine’s fourth annual Ultimate House, culminates in a $1.05 million, fourth-floor penthouse.

“Historic Bloomfield presents so much history, charm, intellect and love — thanks to the caring atmosphere of the Children’s Hospital [of] Pittsburgh [of UPMC], the local universities and other nearby medical facilities,” says Darla Jobkar, Realtor at Northwood Realty. “The vision of providing a multi-use facility is a brilliant way to jumpstart growth and it pulls together our city’s motto, ‘Live, Work, Play.’”

Empire on Liberty features 13-foot ceilings, exposed steel beams and private rooftop areas for condo owners, as well as an on-site parking garage.

Entering the 2,930-square-foot penthouse from a private elevator, visitors will be greeted by a dramatic feature wall before they enter the open-floor space, complete with a solarium and dramatic views of the city.

Construction on the penthouse is ongoing; the cabinetry, tile and wood floors are installed and painting is underway. Next week, Armina Stone will be installing  countertops in the kitchen.

“The penthouse proves old is the new trend in cool, luxurious, modern living,” Jobkar says.

The Ultimate House will be open for tours April 13 to 22. For updates and sneak peeks, follow us on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. More information and ticket sales can be found at pittsburghmagazine.com/ultimate.
