Flip the Switch: Industrial-Style Lighting Made in Pittsburgh

An electrician by trade, designer Thomas Verscharen creates custom lighting out of repurposed pieces.

Talk about bright ideas.

Specializing in vintage-inspired industrial lighting, Pittsburgh-based designer and electrician Thomas Verscharen, the owner of Steel City Illuminations, creates custom table lamps, chandeliers, sconces and more to install in your home.

Verscharen sources from an array of antiques including skateboards, old bottles and bicycle pumps, so that each piece sheds new light on an old standby.

Wood and metal finishes as well as other features for the small table lamp ($70), bookend ($90 each, $160 pair) and tall table lamp ($140) can be customized. Verscharen also will install the pieces in your space, if needed.

Besides the Steel City Illuminations website, Verscharen also sells his pieces at the Heinz History Center in Pittsburgh's Strip District and at The Neighborhood Flea, which takes place on the second Sunday of each month, May through October, in the parking lot at 23rd Street between Penn Avenue and Smallman Street in the Strip District.
