Add a Bygone Beacon to Your Living Room

Vintage signs can add a pop of personality to your decor.

Porcelain signs — especially those with extinct or discarded logos, such as this one advertising Fleet wing circa 1940 ($1,750) — add an unexpected pop of personality to any room.

A common sight beginning in the late 1800s, these weather-resistant beacons consisted of layers of powdered glass meticulously fused together — color by color — onto a rolled iron base. Their durability also made them perfect targets for trigger-happy deadeyes.

To find your own vintage sign, you don't have to hit the road — Tollgate Revival will do it for you. The Lawrenceville boutique, which specializes in curated American Vintage décor, repurposed furniture and reclaimed materials, offers "hunting and gathering" pieces from across the country among its services
