It’s not the most popular time of the year to take engagement or wedding photos — but it can be the most beautiful.

Whether it’s in a wooded winter wonderland or inside a church decorated with poinsettias and evergreens, photo shoots for engagements and weddings can be as beautiful as a sunlight field filled with spring flowers. Check out these 10 couples who braved the elements for that picture-perfect shot.

Melissa and Tony

Wedding date: Dec. 9, 2017
From the Photographer: This wedding was truly special to me; I had the pleasure to photograph eight couples from one family. I knew almost every guest at that wedding, and it felt truly wonderful!

Meghan Monahan and Tomás Castillo

Wedding Date: Dec. 2, 2018
From the Photographer: Meghan and Tomás love the outdoors, so the cold weather didn’t deter them from getting gorgeous sunset photos on Washington’s Landing. Winter weddings are great because the bare trees provide a beautifully neutral background. This, paired with a sunset, is magic for wedding portraits!

Kelsey Olinski and Cale Botti

Wedding Date: Dec. 31, 2014
From the Photographer: Their wedding was a New Year’s Eve wedding, which was a blast! Since the sun sets early that time of the year, we decided to take advantage of the Christmas lights in the lobby of Chestnut Ridge Golf Club for their portraits.

Kaitlin and Matt

Wedding date: Sept. 29, 2018
From the Photographer: We were planning this shoot for a while and were waiting for the first snow to do it. We had a specific vision for that engagement shoot: city lights, dynamic feel, snow, holiday spirit and couple madly in love. We were only able to shoot for 20-30 minutes total due to the brutal weather (23 degrees!), but we definitely got the look we wanted.

Nicole Solomon and Bozi Bjelcic

Wedding date: Dec. 9, 2018
From the Photographer: This engagement session occurred inside Hartwood Acres Mansion. They decorate inside with a large Christmas tree in the main room, and the couple wanted their session to have a holiday theme and feeling. Nicole was wearing a custom-made gown for the occasion.

Stephanie Schalles and Matt Cunningham

Wedding Date: Aug. 10, 2018
From the Photographer: I loved that these two were planning to use their engagement photos for a Save the Date AND Christmas card in one — what a smart idea! We photographed their session on a private farm in the Waynesburg area, and it’s proof that all you need is some beautiful light and a little bit of scenery for your session.
